Embossed Graphics is a suburban Chicago business in its third generation of family ownership. Stanley Pauling started the company in 1958 as a printing supplies company named Anchor Supply Company. In 1962 Mr. Pauling partnered with a German engineer named Jens Scheel in the design of a photo-engraving machine, the Electronic Tracer, and renamed the company Plasti-Graphic Supply. The new machine scanned photographs and made plastic engraving plates instead of the traditional metal plates. Armed with the Electronic Tracer, small printing companies and newspapers could now print photographs economically because they could make their plates with the new plastic material and did not have to send out to a third-party to have their printing plates custom-engraved. Since the electronic photo-engraving provided plates to the letterpress industry, the value of the Electronic Tracer had a lifetime of only about ten years. In the late 1960's and early 1970's, offset lithography replaced letterpress printing in printing companies across the United States. Offset lithography was faster, more precise, safer, and was less harmful to the environment. Stanley Pauling had a problem - he owned unsold Electronic Tracer machines that had been rendered obsolete by the simplicity and popularity of offset lithography.

In order to use his inventory of unsold Electronic Tracer machines, Stanley Pauling discovered that he could make embossing dies that were precise, effective, and disposable after use. Stanley's son, Richard, left his job as an American History teacher, and joined his father at the newly revitalized company, now named Embossed Graphics. The year was 1974.

During the 70's, 80's, and 90's, Richard led the company in expanding the possibilities of embossed stationery, while introducing raised printing, and offset-printed gift items to the ever-expanding line of products. During this time, Embossed Graphics became the most advanced company in the personalized paper arena, serving the most elite retailers, such as Lord and Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue, while growing steadily with smaller boutique specialty retailers around the United States.

As the next century arrived, Embossed Graphics designed its own line of typefaces and monogram styles, in order to escape the worn-out look of many of the most popular typefaces. Also, Embossed Graphics opened its digital printing studio in 2001 and welcomed Trevor Pauling aboard in 2003.

Trevor, Richard's son, grew up in the business, working equally with typography, printing, paper, and retail. Trevor has pushed Embossed Graphics to add more youthful designs, and to enable retailers to do their transactions online in order to gain time and efficiency.

As the first decade of the twenty-first century draws to a close, Embossed Graphics is proud to continue the family tradition of fine typography, precise printing, classical embossing, and the art of personalization. After all, your name is your most valuable possession.
